I am looking for ar15 mags specificly the kind that have the extra lips that tend to center the cartriges as they exit the mag.
secondly if this type of mag has a specific trade name i would like to know the specfic name for it. if anyone knows where to find these i also appreciate it Thanks in advance |

Re: ar15 mag question
There are upgraded green and now orange followers that improve feeding.

Re: ar15 mag question
I don't know if what TTAZZMAN is talking about exists or would make any sense. AR 15 style rifles have a pair feed ramps cut so that they feed one from one side and then another from the other side. If you tried to feed from the middle you'd probably run into horrible problems.

Re: ar15 mag question
what i am talking about isnt rare ....
out of the25 or so ar mags i have approx half tend to center ....so this isnt a rare or obscure issue. i will try to post pics |

the mag on the left is a colt brand and the way it is built it centers the cartrige comeing out of the mag much better than others which is much better for full auto and other types of ars much less jambing its hard to show it with a pic but the colt on the left centers MUCH more than the no name brand on the right the mag type on the left also tends to direct the cartridge up also this has nothing do do with the followers...i have black...green...orange...grey...etc followers its a mag design issue i have mags other than the colt brand that have this type of mag so it is not colt proprietary |
Re: ar15 mag question
Don't know. Those are both old (1960s) 20 round mags with the alloy follower, that's all I know.

Re: ar15 mag question
I have no idea what year they are
But the colt is a 20rder with a black plastic follower the other is a "adventure line" 30rder with a black plastic follower again these are just two differing mags i grabed to take a pic..i could have easily grabed a brand new one with green followers to show the same issue or a plastic mag what i am trying to figure out is how to order mags online and get the "centering" style lips and not the flat feeds. I am quite suprized this hasnt come up before especially with the full auto guys. |

3 on the left feed level 3 on the right are center feeds ....the small lips in frount of the main lips are what creates the centering effect |

I see LONGER feed lips on the 30 round mags on the left, compared to shorter feed lips on the 20 rounders on the right. But I can't see how they "center" the cartridge or how that would aid in feeding, since AR barrel feed ramps look like this:

Re: ar15 mag question
Pretty much any standard AR magazine you can buy today will work just fine, whether it be made out of aluminum, steel, or plastic. They are disposable items meant to be replaced after the effects of wear and use impede their function. If a particular magazine fails to feed reliably, discard it and find one that does.

Re: ar15 mag question
I do not think anyone out there is making mag with feed lips like those old 20 rounders you have.
If you find a company that does ,please post its' name for the rest of us. |
Re: ar15 mag question
I really like the Magpul P-MAGs. FWIW.

Re: ar15 mag question
Silver City
the centering is caused by the small lips at the very frount of the mag pushing the cartrige over by pushing against the neck of the cartrige i may be forced to do some ramp work as shown in your pictures if i cant find the centering mags Jaxon I hate to inform you i have new from the factory mags that do not work with some ar style guns, the point of this thread was because i had noticed a difference in some mags that promoted much better feeding, i am not about to throw away brand new high dollar beta c mags because they dont center. Walter Mitty In the picture with 6 mags the furthest to the right is a brand new plastic mag that came with a Keltec gun its frount lips tend to center the cartrige like the older 20 rounders do SLV its my understanding that Magpuls also tend to center the cartrige but i dont own one yet to see My Beta C mags do not provide the centering lip |
Re: ar15 mag question
If those mil-spec mags with green followers don't work in your AR I would say your gun has some issues.
Can you explain the problem? What's going on? |

i have multiple ar's but i have one that occasionally jambs, IE the nose of the cartrige gets stuck in the feed ramps...(i can and will polish and open up the feed ramps to cure this, so i understand the problem) ....but while i was looking this problem over i noticed it only happens with some mags and not others...and after investigating i noticed the difference in the mags and concluded after much study the centering mags work much better in all the ARs and are much smoother in a full auto gun. so yes i am going to polish the feed ramps in the gun that helped me find this difference ,that is a non-issue what i want to do is buy more mags online but i dont know how to designate this kind of mag vs the other kind of mag so back to the original question as to how to identify and designate this type of mag for orders online. after all the responses i have recieved i think it may be best if i just buy mags at a gun show or shops where i can look them over before purchasing even if it costs a bit more. I want to thank everyone for good intentions and help |
